Hospital Sur Successfully Accomplishes the First Double Lung Transplant in Mexico

Aug 25th, 2017

Physicians from CHRISTUS MUGUERZA Health System successfully completed the first bilateral sequential lung transplant in Mexico.

The procedure, which consisted of transplanting two lungs, was performed on Mauricio Zapián, a 46-year old patient diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an ailment that thickens lung tissue and hinders breathing.

Besides being the first double lung transplant in Mexico, it was also the first that used Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to replace Mauricio’s heart and lung functions before and after the transplant.

This is another example of how the experience and talent of CHRISTUS MUGUERZA’s physicians and our technological capability enable these surgical procedures and therefore provide a hope of life to those that need it most.
